Accidental Hero

Tonight, as we were driving home from my mom's place, we got held up by a bus that stopped in the middle of the road. This happened somewhere near Main street, a block from P. Tuazon along EDSA. Apparently an old lady wanted to get on. It was a wonder the bus driver saw her at all--the stop was barely lit and she was the only one standing there, under the waiting shed.

So the bus stopped a good three yards from where she was standing. As she tried to make her way to the bus in the dark, a young man in a cap, dark shirt and jeans got off the bus, and said a word or two to her. The old lady nodded and allowed the young man to help her on to the bus.

Then the bus zoomed off. And I felt...happy. How many times in your life do you get to actually see an act of kindness like that? And one you saw foe yourself, with no one else teling you about it or without reading it in the papers or seeing it in the news, which I feel can be pretentious.

It was like finding some precious stone in the middle of a riverbed, or realizing you kept a P100 bill in the pocket of an old pair of jeans. It's like finding out how much of a difference you made in a situation you thought nothing of.

That's what the guy did for the old lady. And for me.
